SHOW ME TELL ME

 

From 1st July 2008 the examiner will ask candidates 2 "show me/tell me" questions at the start of the driving test. Should the candidate fail to answer either one or both questions correctly, this would be assessed as 1 driving fault and would not therefore constitute a reason for failing the test in its own right Question s can be show me in which case you would show the examiner how you did this or tell in which you explain to the examiner how it is done. The questions below are listed as to what type they are

THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS YOU COULD BE ASKED :-

 

Show me/explain how you would check that the power steering is working before starting a journey.        SHOW

If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.

 

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.  SHOW

Identify dipstick/oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the min/max markers.

 

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.  SHOW

Identify high/low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level.

 

Show me how you would check the parking brake (Handbrake) for excessive wear. Make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle  SHOW

Demonstrate by applying parking brake that when it is fully applied it secures itself, and is not at the end of the working travel

 

Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level. SHOW

Identify reservoir and explain how to check level

 

Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check you have a safe level of hydraulic break fluidSHOW

Identify reservoir, check level against high/low markings.

 

Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).

Just press the horn on the steering wheel.  SHOW

 

Show me how you check that the direction indicators are working.

Applying the indicators or hazard warning switch and check functioning of all  SHOW

 

Show me how you would check the headlights and tailights are working.

Switch on by using lever on steering column (No need to exit vehicle)  TELL

 

Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. (I can assist you, if you need to switch on the ignition on. Please don’t start the engine)

Operate brake pedal, Then ask the examiner to go to rear of vehicle to see if they are working both sides.   SHOW

 

Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one sideTELL

 

Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

Look in the Manufacturer's guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don't forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.  TELL

 

Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

No cuts or bulges. 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.  TELL

 

Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washers and wipers

Pull washers lever towards you and wet screen for approx 2 seconds then turn wiper on using the same lever  SHOW

 

Show me how you would set the demisters controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens

Set demisters to screen setting, turn the blower on to maximum, you can also turn on Air Conditioning. Then press rear heater switch to turn rear heated screen on  SHOW

 

Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light and explain when you would use them. (No need to exit vehicle , Please don’t start engine)

Turn headlights on then switch rear fog lights on using the same light switch  SHOW

 

Show me how you would switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car

You operate main beam switch on left hand lever and then look at blue light on dashboard which signifies they are on  SHOW

 

Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash

You would set it so the top of the back of your head fits snugly into the headrest TELL

 

Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system

The ABS warning light will come on for about a second when you turn the ignition on, it will then go out, this shows the system is working correctly. If it stays on or comes on when you are driving this will show it is faulty. You should then get the car checked out at a garage.  TELL 

 

OPENING THE BONNET (Mv Car)

 

1) Pull the bonnet lock release handle located on the left hand side in passenger foot well ; the bonnet will then spring up slightly. 

2) Push the lever at the front of the bonnet with your fingertips and raise the bonnet. 

3) Insert the support rod into the slot on the underside of the bonnet. 

4) When closing the bonnet, reset the support rod to its original position, then carefully close the bonnet and       make sure it locks into place.

 

WARNING 

Always check that the bonnet is closed and locked securely to prevent it from opening while driving. The vehicle should only ever be driven with the bonnet securely closed.
